This is a food blog written by a gamer geek who loves to eat and to cook for those she loves. All of them. Including the vegans.
I’m not a vegan. I’ll be honest with you about that. I’m a geek who is also a foodie. I’ve also been dealt a sketchy hand in personal health as far as what I’m allowed to eat, so I eat vegan food the majority of the time because it won’t hasten my untimely demise. Because I’m a foodie, I make it delicious and appealing, because life’s too short to live on frozen veggie burgers and tubs of mediocre hummus. I also believe firmly in being a good host to my friends, and that means feeding everyone at the table, no matter their dietary predilections, and as I have vegans in my life, I cook for them too.
I’m also a gamer. I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs since the late 1980’s, with forays into LARP in my twenties, and I’m still playing in my late forties. Now, I even get to DM for my daughter, who is a born roleplayer with an amazing imagination. Crafting worlds to play in, creating characters from a hint of an idea and turning them into full-fledged people with character growth and story arcs and kickass tavern stories about that dragon they slayed or seduced… some of my fondest memories spring from RPGs, and I’m happy to keep making those memories with my friends as long as I can roll a die.
I also love geeky cookbooks. I have a wide and varied collection of video game, tabletop, historical, and fantasy cookbooks, from Tolkein to George RR Martin to Elder Scrolls to Zelda to the Forme of Cury to Pokemon. What I’ve noticed about the vast majority of them, however, is a dearth of vegan recipes. Some of them do substitutions that can make dishes vegetarian or vegan (with the vegetarian dishes relying heavily on cheese for flavor.) Some of them have a couple of vegan dishes. Most of them, however, throw in a “fantasy hummus” recipe and call it good.
Enter Dungeons and Vegans. I’m putting together a cookbook that I’m hoping to get out in the world in the next year or so. I’m putting this blog out there to show you my hand. To let you know I’m not just talking out my ass. To put my money where my mouth is, and by money I mean some recipes to try out. Obviously, I’m not putting the whole book up here, but I’ll be putting a fair number of the recipes, plus some bonus ones that might not make it into the book, out for your perusal.
So, welcome to Dungeons and Vegans!
